Known as the colorful o rainbow mountain, Palccoyoc (4900 m/16,170 ft.), the flag of Cusco city, doesn’t display a shield or a banner, but a simple rainbow showcasing the 7 basic colours, just as the nearby Vininunca mountain (5020 m/16.566) can be recognised by its multi-colored sides. Palccoyoc is Vininunca’s rocky sister, similar in colour and easy to access. This mountain range consists of 9,000 hectares of terrain situated at (4,900 m/16,710 ft.), 20 km south of Vinincunca. Palccoyoc is a gem of Peruvian nature: the range consists of three beautiful mountains with stripes of coloured sand. The snow was covering its mountain sides until recently, but the ice melting caused by global warming now allow us to admire almost the entirety of its colours. The red, green and yellow tones will leave you breathless during the whole trip. The city of Cusco offers many hidden treasures and landscapes that up to now had not been discovered but that require much care.

  • Cusco has only one main airport, Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, and most flights arrive from Lima. This route is the fastest and most convenient way for tourists to reach the city.
  • Traveling by bus from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 22 hours and can be quite exhausting. If you decide to travel overland, we suggest breaking the journey into sections such as Lima – Nazca – Arequipa – Puno – Cusco to make it more manageable.

  • As for the weather, Palccoyo Mountain sits at an elevation of about 4,900 m (16,076 ft), and Cusco at 3,350 m (11,050 ft). The weather in the Andes is highly variable. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October, as the trails are more stable and the views clearer. However, tours are available year-round, depending on weather conditions and your travel dates.
  • Palccoyo Mountain is a high-altitude destination in the Cusco region, so it’s essential to take altitude seriously. The air becomes thinner and drier, which can make breathing more difficult. We strongly recommend arriving early to acclimatize before your tour.

WE RECOMMEND TO OUR VISITORS:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Coca tea (mate de coca)
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Light walking before your trek
  • Diamox or acetazolamide (consult a doctor before use; widely available in Cusco pharmacies)

Yes. Even though the hike is easier than others, the high altitude may cause symptoms in some visitors. Proper acclimatization is key.

We recommend trekking shoes, warm clothes, rain gear, sunblock, snacks, water, and a daypack.
