The LAKE HUMANTAY Tour is a lovely trail to a spectacular turquoise lake at the base of the glacial peak, Humantay Mountain.

Normally seen on the Sallkantay Trek 5 Days Nigor as an extra side hike on the Ancascocha Trek 5 Day/4 Night this lake is accessible as a day hike if you don’t have the time or inclination to do a multi-day trek. Surrounded by glacial peaks, this route treks to Humantay Mountain. The one day hike is approximately 10km/6.2miles round trip and goes from 3900m/12,795 ft to 4200m/13,780ft. This trail has become very popular and can be crowded. We leave very early in order to avoid the crowds as much as possible.

It is essential to be properly acclimatized for this hike, spending at least two or three days in Cusco (or equivalent altitude) before starting. Minimum passengers necessary for trek departure: 2 people (small groups, 1 person or private/custom treks possible with extra fee). Maximum trekkers per group: 10 people (special, private party groups can exceed maximum).

  • We recommend our visitors to arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before the Humantay Lake tour. This helps your body to acclimate to the high altitude, reducing the chances of altitude sickness during the hike.
  • Cusco has only one main airport, Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, and most flights arrive from Lima. This route is the fastest and most convenient way for tourists to reach the city.
  • Traveling by bus from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 22 hours and can be quite exhausting. If you decide to travel overland, we suggest breaking the journey into sections such as Lima – Nazca – Arequipa – Puno – Cusco to make it more manageable.

  • As for the weather, Humantay Lake sits at an elevation of about 4,200 m (13,780 ft), and Cusco at 3,350 m (11,050 ft). The weather in the Andes is highly variable. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to October, as the trails are more stable and the views clearer. However, tours are available year-round, depending on weather conditions and your travel dates.
  • Humantay Lake is a high-altitude destination in the Cusco region, so it’s essential to take altitude seriously. The air becomes thinner and drier, which can make breathing more difficult. We strongly recommend arriving early to acclimatize before your tour.

WE RECOMMEND TO OUR VISITORS:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Coca tea (mate de coca)
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Light walking before your trek
  • Diamox or acetazolamide (consult a doctor before use; widely available in Cusco pharmacies)
